In the last 20 or 30 years ago, the world has massively changed; and of course, the remarkable technological advancement, in addition to the scientific evolution, is the main reason for the changes happening in all different areas and fields. In this article, we’ll discuss how technology and science help to reduce human waste and carbon dioxide emissions. They might be having a remarkable role in protecting the environment, but still, their privileges are not fully optimised. Businesses should become more environmentally conscious and adopt more eco-friendly strategies and tools, instead of the common traditional ones that cause significant harm to the environment. One tool that has proven its efficiency and adaptability to the market’s fast-paced changes is Digital Signage.

Mainly marketers and business owners adopt digital signage for its improved operational efficiency and to increase brand awareness in a cost-effective manner. Along with the many benefits that digital signage offers, it is also worth mentioning that it is much more environmentally friendly than traditional tools like print-based advertising.

So, why should businesses think that way?

The environmental influence of large corporations has been raising several concerns among world leaders in recent years. It’s important to think of this manoeuvre as a pivotal investment in the future of your business. Think about it this way: what type of message do you want to send to your customers?

If you’re committed to preserving the environment, it’s not enough to simply talk it through and show concerns without taking any actions. Start getting involved instead of solely claiming. Show your customers that you’re willing to put your money where your beliefs and thoughts are to make tangible and sustainable changes to your business practices. By opting for eco-friendly processes, your business can help save the earth, while simultaneously saving you money, and these changes can also encourage other businesses to do the same, which is a win-win situation.

Statistics show that:

• Every year, deforestation has a negative impact on around 18 million acres of forest around the world.

• Paper products are made of about 40% of all wood harvested, equating to about 400 million tonnes of paper produced annually around the world.

And in business….

• 45 % of printed documents in offices are thrown away (and around 30% of printed documents are never even picked up at the printer).

• Paper accounts for 70% of all waste generated by enterprises.

• U.S. firms spend more than $120 million per year solely on paper, excluding ink or disposal costs.

So, while using it as your primary marketing strategy, digital signage is also a key component in helping to reduce these numbers drastically, aiming to save the environment and decrease your business’ carbon footprint.

How does digital signage help the environment

• Print methods immediately raise environmental concerns due to the number of trees that need to be cut, transported to mills, processed and made into paper.

• The chemicals, inks, solvents and adhesives, are all remnants of the printing process and cause significant harm.

• Greenhouse gas emissions are increasing, and methane gas is released from landfill decomposition throughout the paper signage cycle.

• Poster communication has a very short shelf life and the waste generated from monthly print campaigns conducted in multiple locations has far more significant consequences than setting up a digital signage network.

• Ads displayed on digital signage are easy to update, eliminating the need to print new signs over and over as messaging necessities change.

• Posters on the other hand usually get thrown away or dumped only a few weeks after circulation, wasting a significant amount of paper and money.

• Unlike traditional tools, digital signages are delivered and placed only one time to provide information for a lifetime, and it won't need to be replaced anytime soon unless it breaks down.

Despite all the pros, there is always a con…

The production of the digital signage’s main components leaves a one-time eco-footprint as well. But still, it occurs less frequently than with traditional signage. Digital signage also consumes energy and emits emissions as it transmits information, which might cause harm on a smaller scale. But on a larger scale, digital signage leads the way; in an era where advertising content needs to change on a daily basis, its continuous emissions are substantially less polluting than the pollution produced when a printed flyer is replaced and its components are provided.

Summing it up

In terms of cost, effort, and environmental impact, digital signage outperforms paper. Even though digital signage requires electricity, there are various alternatives for reducing power consumption, as well as activities you can do to reduce it even more.
